My daughter is an avid reader of romance novels. She owns thousands of them and has major book shelve-age going on in her room. She decided she must have a Nook. Last Thursday evening, she stopped at Barnes and Noble on her way home from work and picked one up. She was as thrilled as the new mother of a little baby. She called me the next day from work to tell me she gave her Nook a name.
I’m like, “Really?”
She said, “Yes, do you want to know what I named it?”
“Sure,” I said, rolling my eyes.
She gushed with all the excitement of a child entering Disney World for the first time, “I named it…are you ready for this?…The Happiest Bookshelf On Earth!”
Oh geez. You know what I had to do, right? No, I could not let this opportunity to torment my eldest offspring pass. I used Photoshop to quickly make the picture above, which I e-mailed to her at work like a ransom note. She fell for it. She really thought that was her Nook.
For those of you not familiar with a Nook, it is Barnes and Nobles’ e-reader.
This little fella’s 2GB of internal storage will hold 1,500 books, and there are over a million e-books, e-newspapers and e-magazines from which to choose. Thousands of them are even free, and you can read books free at Barnes and Noble stores. The Nook Wi-Fi runs $149, while the Nook 3G + WI-Fi is $199. There is free connection at all AT&T hot spots, but you don’t need a connection to read books you have already downloaded. Another great thing is that you can even loan e-books to your friends, and now you never have to fear the freeloading book-borrowers won’t return them. For those who need yet another reason to buy a Nook, it comes equipped with Chess and Sudoku.
The Nook has a touch screen and a scalable font for those of us who know when it comes to reading size really does matter.
If you are tired of bookshelves taking up all the space in your home, the Nook is definitely for you. It evens comes with clothing options for the fashion-conscious. Oh yes. You can dress this little sucker up with exclusive designer covers from Jonathan Adler, Kate Spade, and Jack Spade. Some of these covers cost about as much as Little Nookie himself.
My technologicus envyitis is flaring up again just looking at “The Happiest Bookshelf On Earth”. I may have to get one myself. Happy reading, y’all.
